Knowing that you may rather do other activities if the wind is marginal…
- Each day we communicate with you to help you make a go/no-go decision (most days are never a problem)
- If a decision is made to go, there is a minimum 1 hour lesson charge
- In order to help you make your decision we’ve provided information about the various wind directions below
Maui Wind Directions for Kiteboarding Lessons:
- IDEAL North Northeast (NNE) and Northeast (NE) – Side Onshore:
- Ideal wind pattern
- Great for all levels of students
- With this flow pattern, your lesson is a go!
- Generally you have a 90% chance of getting the most out of your lesson
- East Northeast (ENE) – Side Shore:
- 2nd best wind direction
- Good for all levels of students
- With this flow pattern, your lesson is a go!
- ALTHOUGH, it is gustier next to shore, which can make launches challenging; still this can be a tremendous benefit to most students’ learning experience.
- You have about an 85% chance of getting the most out of your lesson on these days
- North – Onshore: A northerly wind is the third best condition at Kanaha, providing very steady and generally lighter flow.
- 3rd best wind direction
- Very good wind for beginners who are practicing drills on the beach
- Good for lighter students (<150lbs) who may really enjoy this smooth wind!
- ALTHOUGH, heavier students may have a problem with stepping up and riding in this lighter wind
- You have about a 70% chance of getting the most out of your lesson on these days
- POOR East to East Southeast (ESE) – Side Offshore:
- Poor quality wind
- An ESE day can alternate between being extremely turbulent (gusty and “switchy”) to no wind at all!
- HOWEVER, for very motivated intermediate to advanced students, we can always make a go of it with in-the-water practice or a ground school and simulation of various advanced kiteboarding topics: self-launch, self-landing, self-rescue techniques…
- MINIMUM 1 HOUR CHARGE for deciding to make a go of it with an instructor at the beach
- You have about a 35% chance of getting the most out of your in-the-water lesson on these days
Please keep in mind that the weather can change at any moment and lessons may need to be cut short for various reasons. In the case where a lesson is cut short, you will only be charged for the amount of hours you completed.
